NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover and Mars Ingenuity mini-helicopter took their first selfie together and it’s nothing less than epic. Captioned “Two bots, one selfie”, the Ingenuity helicopter can be seen at about 13 feet (4 meters) away from the rover in the image.

The selfie has been shared by NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover official Twitter where the caption states, “Two bots, one selfie. Greetings from Jezero Crater, where I’ve taken my first selfie of the mission. I’m also watching the #MarsHelicopter Ingenuity as it gets ready for its first flight in a few days. Daring mighty things indeed”. Ever since its posting, the image has received over 29,000 likes, 5,000 retweets, and 200 comments. Check it out:

NASA reveals that the Perseverance rover captured the image using a camera called WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering), part of the SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals) instrument, located at the end of the rover’s robotic arm.

Moreover, Perseverance’s selfie with Mars Ingenuity helicopter was stitched together from 62 individual images that were taken while the rover was looking at the helicopter, and then again when the rover was looking at the Watson camera. If you want further explanation into how exactly NASA’s Perseverance and Curiosity rovers capture selfies, check out the detailed videos here.

Perseverance’s mission on Mars is focused mainly on astrobiology where it will search for signs of ancient microbial life on the red planet. This will be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.
