The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently announced that its NASA JPL Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has released new stunning images of Mars. The images show different features of the red planet in great detail and have been shared by NASA on its official Instagram social account. Ever since its posting, the image has gathered over 770,000 likes and a whopping 2,600 comments.

The caption for the image shared by NASA states, “You’ve got mail 💌from Mars. Our @NASAJPL Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter recently released new images showing off the many different features of the Red Planet! Swipe through to explore!”. The first image that you see shows a layered rock formation within Jiji Crater that has eroded into buttes and stair-like layers on the red planet. The second photo is that of a unique polar dune field during northern spring, revealing some interesting patterns, and the third image is that of ice sheets spread across Mars’ south pole. For the uninitiated, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO, has studied the Red Planet’s atmosphere and terrain from orbit since 2006 and also serves as a key data relay station for other Mars missions, including the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity.

NASA states that MRO comes equipped with a powerful camera called HiRISE that has aided in a number of discoveries, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has sent back thousands of stunning images of the Martian surface that are helping scientists learn more about Mars, including the history of water flows on or near the planet’s surface.
