Nokia brand licensee HMD Global has just teased that it will launch an Android Go smartphone in China on December 15th. It should make its way to international markets sooner rather than later. Although we don’t know much about the specifications of the mystery Nokia device, it shouldn’t be anything spectacular considering that it runs Android Go. The software is, after all, tailor-made for low-power smartphones that lack the chops to run resource-heavy modern-days applications. It comes with lightweight versions of popular Google apps like Maps, Search, YouTube, etc. The yet-to-be-announced phone should be fairly affordable if Nokia’s previous Android Go releases are anything to go by.

With the Nokia 6.3, Nokia 7.3 5G, and Nokia 9.3 PureView launches delayed indefinitely, one would hope that HMD Global would launch something other than an Android Go phone. Thankfully, the Nokia 3.4 is said to make its Indian debut sometime in December, according to a report. The mid-range smartphone comes with a slightly dated Snapdragon 460 SoC and will allegedly cost Rs 11,999. The Nokia 5.4, on the other hand, will come with slightly better internals, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662, four rear cameras, and a 4,000mAh battery. Unfortunately, its release date is not known at this point.

Nokia’s Android Go phone will be the company’s first of its kind for the Chinese market. It’ll be interesting to see just what apps the device comes pre-loaded with, as the Google Play Store isn’t available in China. Perhaps Nokia will pre-load a lightweight version of local app repositories onto the device. The Chinese market is flush with alternatives for Google services, and HMD Global may have found something that well on low-power smartphones.
