WandaVision is about to kickstart the MCU’s Phase 4 in a week. Ever since the Disney Plus show was announced, fans have wondered if it will be based on or mention ‘House of M’, a 2005 comic book run. The popular fan theory has come up every now and then since the studio has been dropping a barrage of teasers and trailers. While none of the puzzling clips gives away the plot of the era-hopping show, a fan noticed a wine bottle in one of the frames with a label that reads “Maison du Mépris” which translates to “House of Contempt” or “Misery”. As in House of M?
In a chat with Jimmy Kimmel, WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen who reprises her roles as Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff went through some fan theories and was asked whether the wine bottle in question is a possible Easter Egg. Olsen who was very vague about it, chose to neither confirm nor deny the theory saying, “our prop guy Russell — Russell would be a very, very clever man if he put that in.”
Marvel movie stars are used to dodging spoilery questions and in a way, it’s great that Olsen is keeping fans hoping rather than flat out denying the fan theory.
In ‘House of M’, Scarlet Witch has a psychotic breakdown and ends up altering reality in order to be reunited with her lost children. The eight-issue run featured her twin brother Quicksilver and father Magneto. So far, everything we know about WandaVision points to one conclusion – some of the show’s events take place in her mind. It checks out since Vision was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War raising a tonne of questions about how he’s alive in the upcoming show. The trailers see Wanda and Vision in multiple sitcom settings, living the life of a normal couple till hints of something amiss from their domestic adventures show up. Initial theories also mention recall from a 2015-16 comics run ‘The Vision’ that places Vision in a seemingly perfect suburban life in Washington DC.
We also know that WandaVision is about to take a trip through sitcom history referencing multiple classic sitcoms including The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, Full House, Friends, Parks and Recreation, The Office and more.
While we busy ourselves with speculation, WandaVision will release this January 15 on Disney+ Hotstar Premium. Here’s a quick run-through of all the questions you might have –
