2020 has been the weirdest, most terrible year for the world and for India. With a global pandemic, protests, tumultuous world politics and the overall bleak realisation that mankind has been faced with by far the loneliest couple of months, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster and not of the good kind. To put it in words, or rather in search terms, Google’s Year In Search results for 2020 has arrived and it perfectly encapsulates the absurd year Indians have had.

Topping search trends this year is the IPL (Indian Premier League) followed by, you guessed it, ‘Coronavirus‘ as we frantically found information (and false information) on the search engine. It’s good to see that we managed to hold on to our obsession with cricket and memes while living the work from home life. Making it to the top trending questions was ‘How to make paneer?’ because obviously and ‘What Is Binod?’ with reference to a moment in internet virality.

Here’s what Indians googled the most in 2020.

  1. Indian Premier League
  2. Coronavirus
  3. US election results
  4. PM Kisan Yojana
  5. Bihar election results
  6. Delhi election results
  7. Dil Bechara
  8. Joe Biden
  9. Leap day
  10. Arnab Goswami

India watched the high-stakes US Presidential elections with rapt attention so it’s rather unsurprising that within a few months, Joe Biden became the most searched personality. And then there’s Arnab who has been having one field day at a time with rife opportunity to spread hate, propaganda and twist narratives. Celebrities on the list include Amitabh Bachchan, Rhea Chakraborthy and Kangana Ranaut for vastly different reasons.

  1. Joe Biden
  2. Arnab Goswami
  3. Kanika Kapoor
  4. Kim Jong-un
  5. Amitabh Bachchan
  6. Rashid Khan
  7. Rhea Chakraborty
  8. Kamala Harris
  9. Ankita Lokhande
  10. Kangana Ranaut

The collective queries that came pouring in on Google say a lot about our divided attention between viruses, CAA, NRC and nepotism, terms that sparked the biggest debates of the year.

What is…

  1. What is coronavirus
  2. What is binod
  3. What is plasma therapy
  4. What is COVID-19
  5. What is CAA
  6. What is colon infection
  7. What is solar eclipse
  8. What is NRC
  9. What is hantavirus
  10. What is nepotism

Several ‘Near me’ searches define the stressful ordeal of finding WFH equipment, grocery stores and COVID-19 tests. Among the top ‘How to’ queries, India had questions like “ How to increase immunity” given the pandemic and “How to make dalgona coffee” or “cake” because cooking became so much more than a hobby.

While IPL is a constant feature, lower on the list of news events calls for reflection on just how devastating the year has been.
