Can we do one thing right? Apparently not. The arrival of the Coronavirus vaccines attracted a lot of skepticism largely because it hadn’t gone through the mandated three trials and were being sent out anyway. Still, it was welcomed because we have been in this godforsaken lockdown for longer than we can afford and this vaccine would give us a chance to get the hell out of it. And just when we were starting to see a ray of hope, with eminent leaders and health workers taking the vaccine, cases of adverse reactions to the vaccine started to emerge. Now, things have gotten so bad that Bharat Biotech has issued a factsheet stating who should or shouldn’t take the vaccine. Oy vey!

According to NDTV, from this Saturday, India had started vaccinating lakhs using two COVID vaccines – the home-made Covaxin and the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine Covishield produced by Serum Institute of India. Along with that, there were reports that out of around 3.8 lakh people, 580 cases of adverse reactions have been observed and seven people have been hospitalised. One death was reported from Moradabad, UP. It was a ward boy at a Govt. hospital who had received the vaccine shot 24 hours before his death. The district’s Chief Medical Officer said that the death wasn’t due to the vaccine. The second person to die was from Karnataka’s Bellary. The government said that none of the other health workers who had take the vaccine along with the now dead person had shown any adverse reactions.

All that said, this raised some serious concerns about the efficiency of the vaccine. So, Bharat Biotech has released a factsheet saying stuff like “there is a remote chance that the Covaxin could cause a severe allergic reaction. For this reason, your vaccination provider will ask you to stay for 30 minutes after each dose of vaccination at the place where you received your vaccine for monitoring after vaccination” and “In case of any serious adverse events, vaccine recipients will be provided with a medically recognised standard of care in the government designated and authorised centres/hospital. The compensation for the serious adverse event will also be provided”.

I don’t know how to conclude this because it boggles my mind that this “factsheet” wasn’t released before the vaccines were sent out and were championed by celebrities and whatnot. Just stay safe, everyone, because an underlined para of this “factsheet” says that the “clinical efficacy of Covaxin is yet to be established and it is still being studied in Phase 3 clinical trial. Hence, it is important to appreciate that receiving the vaccine does not mean that other precautions related to Covid-19 need not be followed.”
